Treatment Guidelines:
Pre-Operative Gastric Bypass
- Evaluate for the presence of eating disorder
- Collaborate with patient’s Primary Care Physician to obtain labs and assess for potential factors which could be affecting weight or behaviors around food
- Evaluate anthropometric data
- Review patient’s weight history, dietary patterns and prior weight loss attempts
- Provide recommendations about meal planning and balanced food choices
- Educate patient on strategies for changing eating behaviors in preparation for surgery
- Inform patient of what to expect regarding dietary changes before, during and after surgery
- Provide information on diet advancement and recommending nutritional supplements
- Assists patient in losing weight (if needed) prior to surgery, to minimize risk of surgical complications
Post-Operative Gastric Bypass
- Provide nutritional education around meeting dietary restriction requirements at each phase of recovery
- Obtain labs regularly to asses for potential vitamin/mineral deficiencies specific to gastric bypass
- Informs patient of specific foods he or she should emphasize or avoid
- Advise patient of meal/snack and recipe ideas based on personal preference to facilitate compliance with gastric bypass limitations
- Focus on goal of minimizing occurrence of post-surgical complications
- Assist patient in transitioning through phases of dietary advancement, back to solid foods
- Monitor weight, labs and behavioral changes to help patient maintain success in his or her weight loss journey
